Our memories as we experience them are not direct representations of reality. When recalling memories, we are reconstructing them from multiple sources of information – especially our general knowledge of the world. We often misremember information in alignment with our beliefs, habits and expectations rather than how it really occurred. Dr. Ramey discusses the cognitive science of memory reconstruction and her research on which factors determine how much our memories reflect reality versus reconstructions from general knowledge.
